Cathedral of St. John the Baptist

The largest and most luxurious temple in Trnava is the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. It is the first sacral building in Slovakia that was built in the Baroque style. It is located on University Square and is currently the Cathedral of the Trnava Archdiocese. One of the biggest events in the history of the church is the visit of Pope John Paul II. in 2003, which is still commemorated by his bronze statue in front of the church.

From the outside, the temple has a simple impression, but its interior will leave visitors breathless. The dominant feature is the monumental all-wooden altar, which is considered the largest of its kind in Central Europe. The interior decoration is full of colors and gold, it is made up of rich stucco ornamentation and 4 large paintings depicting the life of St. John the Baptist. The temple is open seasonally for tourists and admission is free.
