The Košice Children’s Historical Railway was established in 1955-1956 as the Pioneer Railway. It was the first recreational railway in the former Czechoslovakia, but it also served to educate and motivate new railway workers. At the beginning of the 1990s, the railway was threatened with the cessation of operations, but it was saved with the contribution of the later president of the Slovak Republic, Rudolf Schuster.
Today, the operation is ensured by the oldest steam locomotive in Central Europe (Katka), which is supplemented by a pair of engines Danka and Janka. Trains run regularly on weekends and holidays on the 3.9 km long track. The track currently ends in the Alpinka recreation area, and its possible extension further into the valley is rather unrealistic, even utopian. Today, the civic association owns several types of railway vehicles, with which it organizes themed rides outside of this railway, and it is also possible to order individual rides.
