The museum has a nationwide scope, while it focuses on the development of Slovak society during the Second World War and shortly before its outbreak. However, the greatest emphasis is placed, as the name suggests, on the documentation of the anti-fascist resistance and the Slovak National Uprising.

The most famous exhibition is located in the SNP memorial in Banská Bystrica. It is divided into 13 thematic units, each dedicated to a different chapter of Slovak and world history. The units are made up of information panels, maps, photographs, documentary films and, last but not least, objects from individual periods.
