Šomoška Castle

The origins of Šomoška Castle date back to the 13th or 14th century after the Tatar invasion. It was built from basalt blocks quarried directly on the castle hill. The well-known “stone waterfall” located in its close vicinity was also found during construction. The castle is located on the Slovakian-Hungarian border, above the village of Šiatorská Bukovinka. A marked tourist route leads to it from the village.

In the beginning, the castle had a triangular floor plan, in the Middle Ages it grew to include a Gothic palace and an entrance tower in the eastern part. The most fundamental reconstruction took place in the 16th century, when it was expanded by two cannon towers, a barbican and buildings on the north and south sides. After the suppression of the Rákoczi uprising, it began to deteriorate, and at the beginning of the 19th century, even its last tower burned down after being struck by lightning. The castle is in its present form thanks to conservation and partial reconstruction started in 1972.
