The Basilica of the Seven Sorrowful Virgin Mary

The Basilica of the Seven Sorrowful Virgin Mary in Šaštín-Strážy is one of the most important basilicas in Slovakia. Its origins go back to 1736, when its construction began according to Matej Vépi’s plans, together with the adjacent Pauline monastery. It was declared a minor basilica in 1964.

Tens of thousands of pilgrims from all over the world visit the basilica every year, especially during the Feast of the Sending of the Holy Spirit (Turice) and the Feast of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows (September 15). The basilica is closely connected with the statue of the Sorrowful Virgin from 1564, whose veneration was authorized by Archbishop Imrich Esterházi in 1732. It is a late Gothic Danubian work by an unknown author placed on a late baroque altar.
