The old castle in Banská Štiavnica

The old castle in Banská Štiavnica is located above Námestí sv. Trojice, under the foot of Mount Paradajs. The creation of the castle dates back to 1486, but its origins are estimated as early as the 13th century. In this period, it was an anti-Turkish fortress, which was created by rebuilding the church and later developed into its present form. It is thus one of the oldest architectural monuments of Banská Štiavnica.

The castle’s dominant feature is the originally Gothic castle tower with an underpass, which also includes the chapel of St. Michal with an above-ground and an underground part, into which the bones selected during the digging of new graves were placed. Today, the castle is home to several permanent exhibitions and a venue for various cultural events. The old castle is managed by the Slovak Mining Museum and is open all year round.
