The Orava dam

The Orava dam is the largest water reservoir in Slovakia, which is part of the Orava waterworks. Part of the dam is Slanický and Ptačí ostrov, which were created after the flooding of the village of Slanica. Only Slanický is accessible, where there is a Roman Catholic church, in which a permanent exhibition is installed. Bird Island, as the name suggests, is an important breeding ground for waterfowl, and therefore entry to it is prohibited.

In summer, the Orava Dam is an important tourist destination. There are seasonal sightseeing cruises connected with a visit to Slanické Island, but also a number of water sports and attractions are available. In winter, during periods of severe frost, the surface freezes, which provides a great opportunity to practice winter sports and walks, where visitors can get new views of the surrounding landscape.
