The Slanice Island of Art

The Slanice Island of Art is a remnant of the village of Slanica, which was flooded during the construction of the Orava Dam. Church of the Ascension of St. The cross standing on its top was originally the conclusion of Calvary, of which only 11 chapels exist today, of which 3 are flooded. In the church there is a gallery of folk art, where a permanent exhibition called “Traditional Folk Sculpture and Painting” from the collections of the Orava Gallery in Dolní Kubín is installed.

On the island you can also find monuments from the cemetery that was once located here, in the former tomb there is an exhibition on the topic “History of flooded villages during the construction of the Orava Dam”. One of the dominant features of the island is the statue of Anton Bernolák, the codifier of the Slovak language and a native of the village of Slanica. It is possible to reach the island by boat, which runs at regular intervals during the tourist season.
