Underground archaeological complex Dolná brána

In the Middle Ages, Košice was surrounded by an ingenious system of fortifications, of which only small fragments have survived to this day. It includes the archaeological complex Dolná brána, which hides part of the fortifications from the 13th century, when a large part of the city was concentrated in today’s center. It is interesting that the city at that time was several meters lower, and therefore this fortification is now underground.
The Dolná brána complex was discovered during the major reconstruction of Hlavná ulica in 1996-1998, and the then mayor and later president of the Slovak Republic, Rudolf Schuster, helped to save it. The discovery of the underground was the impetus for the creation of the museum, which was modeled after the museum in Verona. Today, the archaeological museum offers the opportunity to tour the southern part of the fortifications with the gate and barbicans and several interactive elements that approximate medieval Košice.
